While I was taking the course English to Turkish translation, I learn that knowing a foreign language did not mean that you were able to translate a text. As my first course, in this course Turkish to English translation, we mentioned many times that only knowing a language structurally was not enough to make a good translation. Knowing culture, time, idioms, dialects etc are also very important while translating something. We learned the translation theories. They would be beneficial for my future life as an English teacher since as all you know, if you are an English teacher, you are assumed as a translator English to Turkish or Turkish to English. People expect from you to make a very good translation especially if you graduated from METU. However, I do not agree with these people because we just take two course and we do not much go in deep in translation methods. In addition I do not want to be unfair by calling myself as a translator toward the people who receive specific education in this field.
In this course 496, I learned very interesting topic like translation sectors in Turkey. We had guests who were professional in their fields. We all had very enjoyable time with them. Articles that we read gave me new perspectives about the translation. In class translations were so enjoyable that sometimes we laugh a lot while we were trying to find exact words. The topics were so interesting to me.
While you are translating something, you both learn grammar and new words so these are beneficial for me as a future English teacher. In our department, translation courses are not enough I think. There should be a few more.
